Common Questions

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults.

  • Symptoms include difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. You can have symptoms in all 3 categories or just in 1 category.

  • Causes of ADHD are not fully understood, but research suggests that genetics and brain development may play a role. Environmental factors may also contribute to the development of the disorder.

  • We usually suggest to combine psychotherapy and medication to treat ADHD. The goal is to start medication which may help balance your sleep, energy, appetite and concentration, while simultaneously meeting with a therapist weekly or biweekly. Once you change some thought processes, make some lifestyle changes, and start to physically feel better with the help of psychiatric medication, it may be time to stop taking the medication. By this point, these new behaviors and thought processes may have already changed with the help of therapy, brief periods of medication management, and taking an active approach in your life.

We often use stimulants and other medications to treat ADHD.

  • "I've been struggling with mental health all my life, particularly depression and ADHD. I didn't realize or think I needed help until I was in a really dark place and was lucky enough to reach out to Emily when I did. I initially found Emily through another organization and when she transitioned to her own independent practice I was glad to be able to continue having her as my psychiatrist. Even though our sessions are remote, I can see how empathetic, kind and receptive she is and appreciate her listening and understanding my personal struggles."
